How to Speed up a Slow Running Computer or Laptop

What’s the best way to speed up a computer when it starts to slow down? It may seem daunting to fix computer lag, and this guide will help you improve slow computers with quick steps that deliver long-lasting results.

This article focuses on Windows desktops, but there are also ways to speed up a Mac or laptop.

1. Find out which programs slow down your computer

It would help if you evaluated whether programs that consume a lot of memory are worth it. These can be very high-level programs, items that start automatically but don’t use, or programs you have opened before and forgotten about. These programs can be removed to speed up your computer.

How programs drain your resources

Some programs are very efficient when they’re not in use, and some programs can consume a lot more processing power and RAM when they are busy working or checking for updates. This leaves fewer resources for other programs, which can slow down switching between programs and data updates in some apps.

Be rid of unnecessary programs.

Close all unnecessary programs to speed up your computer. To do so, press the CTRLalt, and Delete. Select Task manager. You can view what’s open and how much CPU and memory it uses on the Processes Tab. You can also close any programs you don’t use.

Start-up programs should be disabled.

Many computers have programs that automatically start when they turn on. There may be programs that you didn’t need at the beginning of your computer’s operation but are no longer required. These programs can be disabled to fix computer lag. Press the CTRL, alt, and Delete keys simultaneously to check which programs run when your computer turns on. Select Task manager. The Start-up tab shows you the items that will open when you start up the computer. You can decide what programs you need to close when the computer starts up.

2. Verify your internet connection and web browser

You may notice your computer running slow if you check that you are using the latest version of your web browser. The information will vary by browser. However, the About option will show you the version number. Enable the option to install new versions if it is available automatically. You can slow down your web browsing by installing too many extensions and addons. It all depends on the browser you use, but you should be capable of finding a menu called Extensions or Addons that will let you delete any you don’t need.

3. Defragment your hard disk drive

Your hard drive can be defragmented (or defragged) to reduce the time it takes to locate all the data needed to run apps and programs. These pieces of data are saved on the hard drive before being moved to RAM.

An HDD, a hard drive (and not a solid-state drive), records data in small groups at different locations on the disk. There may be many pieces of data related over time, but they are spread across the disk. The system takes longer to locate each part of the data. This process will be accelerated by defragmenting your hard drive. Learn more about defragmenting hard drives.

Click on the Start button or Windows button to defragment your disk. Next, select Control Panel and then System Security. Click on Defragment Your Hard Drive under Administrative Tools. You have two options: you can choose to have the process run on a scheduled basis or click Analyze disk to determine if it should be done immediately.

4. You should update hardware that could slow down your computer

It can make an older, slower computer feel brand new again by identifying hardware that needs to be upgraded. This can be significantly cheaper than buying a new computer.

Your storage drive and your RAM are two key hardware components that affect the speed of your computer. A computer can be slowed down by having too little memory or using a hard drive that hasn’t been defragmented in a while.

  1. Upgrade storage with a solid-state drive

The storage drive on your computer is responsible for keeping everything you use every day. This includes documents, operating systems, photos, music, and programs. It can cause noticeable slowdowns or out-of-dates in your computer’s performance.

An SSD speeds up your computer.

Technology is what makes a traditional hard drive different from a solid-state drive. An HDD moves an actuator arm along a spinning platter mechanically to locate each piece of data. However, an SSD accesses the data digitally using flash memory chips, and SSDs can retrieve documents, images, and videos faster while using less power.

Portable SSDs like the CrucialX8 are a relatively new type of solid-state drive. You can enjoy all the same benefits as internal SSDs without replacing the movement in your computer, and they can also be used with multiple devices and systems.

To find the best SSD for your system, use Crucial(r), Advisor, and System Scanner below.

5. Increase the memory (RAM)

The memory stores the current data, not videos or programs stored permanently on the storage drive. This allows it to be retrieved quickly and acts as a reservoir of resources for your system.

Memory is used when you do any of the following:

  • Move your mouse
  • You can open tabs in your Internet browser and browse between them.
  • Type an email
  • Create a spreadsheet
  • Editing photos or videos
  • You can play a game, listen to music or watch a video.

How memory can help your computer

Your system will be able to do more with less memory. It is easy to solve slow performance issues such as slow response times and switch between apps.

Although it may seem daunting, upgrading your memory is very simple. You can easily install new memory with a screwdriver, an owner’s manual, and a video tutorial. You don’t need to be a computer expert.

Let’s get to the bottom of it: What do you do if your computer slows down?

You don’t need to make considerable changes to fix a slow computer. You can make small, easy changes that will immediately impact your computer’s performance and last a long time.

My laptop is slow

Too many programs can cause a slow computer, which can slow down your computer’s performance and impact its speed. This can be fixed in two ways: decrease the number of running programs and increase your computer’s memory and processing power.
